Survival Foods that are great during short-term disasters:
The following items are great for short-term emergencies, and will stay fresh for a long period of time. During most disasters you’re going to want to have food that requires very little cooking, or can be eaten without any preparation at all. Make sure some of your stockpile includes these types of food.
Other good survival foods: 2 – 5 years of shelf life
- Canned Tuna
- Canned Meats
- Canned Vegetables & Fruits
- Peanut Butter
- Coffee
- Tea
- Ramen Noodles – not the greatest food in the world but they are very cheap so they made the survival food list.
- Hard Candy
- Powdered milk
- Dried herbs and spices
Items that can be used for more than cooking:
-
Apple Cider Vinegar – Cleaning, cooking, and has antibiotic properties
-
Baking Soda – Cleaning, cooking, etc…
-
Honey – Mentioned again for its antibiotic properties and wound healing.
We understand that Ramen Noodles (#7 above) isn't a favorite by everyone. But we are HUGE Ramen Noogle fans. And again, these bad boys are insanely inexpensive and come in a wide variety of flavors, so you very easily could find one that appeals to your palate. So… definitely worth stocking up on and keeping these guys around.
But who said survivalist food has to be bland? After all, you're already going through a traumatic event, right? Why not prepare yourself with something you can survive on while not completely penalizing your tastebuds?

I would also recommend dried rice and beans. These are packed with energy and can store for quite a long time.
Thanks David – you’re absolutely right. Rice and beans are an excellent source of protein and energy. Great suggestion!
I have large sacks of rice and beans in my emergency pantry. I’m concerned about the amount of fuel it takes to prepare these…. funny the Ramen never occurred to me. Boil some water and it’s done. Good call.
Any canned meats, chicken, corned beef, spam 😉
Corned beef – that’s a great recommendation!
Any dried pasta. Bottled waters
Root vegetables., which can be rotated every month or so and replenished
These are all excellent suggestions. Thanks, Cheryl!
dried fruits.
The LDS Church has been advocating having a two-year supply of food, and 2 weeks (including water ) in case of emergency, for at least the past 60 years. Emergency Essentials has a pretty good catalog.
public library is your greatest resource; maps to travel un-noticed throughout sewer system to access your resources. high grrade pet food # 1 on my can goods list at distributers..
They say Everyone likes Ramen- Well not this guy. For the same money I can stock up on Angle hair pasta that will cook in the temped water from a coffee pot. The difference between the two is better nutrition and the pasta is good cold the next day. Just add a tad of Apple cider vinegar peas and what ever else you like. 😉
Finally! A page that tells me who to hate AND what to eat!
