10 Bug Out Vehicles That Won’t Let You Down When SHTF

Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle featured

You may think you're fully prepared to bug out, but bug out preparations are a lot more than just stockpiling food, water, supplies, and assembling a top-notch bug out bag. You also need to ensure there's a plan in place to get yourself to a bug out location when the grid goes down.

Even if you don't have a bug out location setup, it's still vital to have a rugged vehicle you can depend on when SHTF. Think about it: when all of the stores are cleared out and police have abandoned their post, it's important to stop criminals from discovering your whereabouts. They are designed for fuel efficiency and safety, not SHTF reliability.

Today's vehicles simply won't do when it comes to being rugged.

That's why this list of 10 vehicles you should consider will save your butt. Find out which bug out vehicles won't let you down when the grid goes down.

6.2 was designed in conjunction with Detroit diesel. There was the, I believe, Oldsmobile 350 diesel, which was in fact a reworked gasser. If you had an m1009 with a 5.7 diesel, some dumbass swapped it in. They came with a th400, and 3.08 gears, so, having a redline at a little over 3k, and no overdrive, you don’t get top speed. You don’t buy an old 4×4 for top speed. And you don’t buy a diesel for mud either, you need high hp, tire spinning gasoline. Not low end torquey diesel, that’s for crawling. Just because you misused your truck, doesn’t mean it’s junk. Just because your example wasn’t taken care of doesn’t mean it’s junk.

4×4 m939 conversion with 14.00 R20 18 ply military tires 8.3 all fuel cummins, dump old oil, paint thinner and other crap like that In it and it doesn’t care, we sell the 6×6 versions for $9500-$11,000 even an older whistler deuce and a half with a wrecker on it $11,500, all come with fresh tires fuel lines and paint job and road legal and will tread 9.5 ft of water

I’m glad your Google works great, mine still had a 5.7. I know because I owned it I was there and I saw it with my own two eyeballs. It still sucked. It still had no n power. I’m not an idiot, I know that a high rpm gas engine does better in a 4×4, you missed where I said it was TOTALLY useless. You failed to address the ignorant 24 volt system, or the fact that mine in particular broke two flywheels and multiple starter bolts off into the engine block. How did I misuse it? By turning the key over?

  4. Andrew Beeman said:

Haha no m1009s came with a 5.7 the army started using them in 85 and the 5.7s were only 76-77 Chevy pickups and a few cars, the 5.7 is a reworked Chevy small block, the 6.2 is design built by Detroit. I know I work for a business that buys anything military vehicle related from auction fixes them up and resells them, if it’s a 5.7 someone must’ve put a 5.7 in it. I call bs unless you have pictures to prove it. None the less 6.2s are gutless and not very strong

24v was to maintain compatibility with every other vehicle in our inventory, far from ignorant. Besides, only the ignition is 24v, everything else is 12v. Hate that about your flywheels and starter bolts, mine runs strong. Also hate that someone put a 5.7 in your truck, that was never factory milspec.

It’s long gone and frigging good riddance. After it broke off the humpteenth starter bolt in the engine block and I drilled that sob and used an ez-out to remove it I sold that pos and got a real diesel truck.

  7. Seth Pinson said:

I never could get an answer from anyone why it was shattering the flywheel. I did not “misuse ” it.

I work at a military surplus business that buys and sells deuce and a halfs, we run just like a car lot too just with military trucks. We have over 40 deuce and a halfs a few humvees too, they come and go like no other, yeah a 2010 Nissan is better that’s a joke, people don’t know this but 5 ton 6x6s sell from $4500-$9500 we have a winch truck for 11,500 and a HEMTT for 14,500, with only 7000-9000 miles rebuilt by the army A little EMP will fry the ecu on a 2010. You don’t understand that you have a 2010, and that your headlights tailights turn signals door locks and 4×4 is all ran through a BCM, even your interior lights, Windows, yup them too,$#%&!@*is run by the TCM, literally a tiny EMP and boom that fucker is dead just how the government wants it to be

That and making moonshine that strong isnt easy unless you have been taught by an old school moonshiner trust me on that one . Ppl think just bc they watched an episode of “moonshiners” they can run a still that they bought off of ebay

  11. Monte Mason said:

What a crock of trash every one knows they are gonna detonate an emp and blame terrorist the only thing that will run after that is way earlier than the 80s and has a points style ignition

And I’ve run diesels with ten year old fuel in them. No stabilizers added

I’ve got an ’86 F350 with a diesel that requires one 12v wire to run. I’m good to go

  14. Roger Miller said:

you could uses any chevy with a 350 and convert it back to a carburetor and points

Where do you get horse feed? Better have a good stash because cows will probably have priority.

Cummings or International diesel if Truck, Detroit or CAT if Bus/Freighter. MOPAR (Jeep, Plymouth/Dodge-Chrysler) or Volvo for Gas Engine. Chevy/GM pre-87 (before TBI, all carb) if you can’t put in a MOPAR, Porsche or VW bug if you want air-cooled.

Unimogs? 2 1/2 tons? CUCVs? Ask any veteran – thirsty and maintenance-intensive.

I saw that and thought what the heck, i will see what they say. Someone does not know what they are talking about. If out of 10 the 80 series landcruiser is not on the list. The most reliable vehicle ever made and maybe the most capable overlanding suv ever made with a straight axle and factory front and rear axles.

Ive never watched moonshiners, my granma was an old school shiner from the hills of Kentucky

And as for the rubber seals, if your builden a bug out truck, get the seals for alcohol in advance then swap em out when ever ya need too, it takes bout 14 days from when ya start your ash till its ready to brew, should have time to change seals before your dependent on alcohol

  21. Bubba Stierwalt said:

Only problem withthat is the fuel injection and computer, my daily driver is a 90 f150 with the 300 inline and an automatic overdrive , its 2wd but gets great milage for goin to work

  22. Bubba Stierwalt said:

As far as fuel sources its a giid idea to have an onboard electric fuel pump, when SHTF and the grids down, how many gallons of fuel will be stuck in the tanks underground at every gas station, with an onboard pump ya fill your truck at any of them

  23. Jacob Eldredge said:

Josh Totherow okay, so that requires reworking the frame, adapting a transmission however you decide to do it, and reworking the firewall.

  24. Jacob Eldredge said:

Seth Pinson if it was a two piece flywheel that’s why, they were notoriously weak. I didn’t say gas was better in a 4×4, I said it was better for mud. Just because all you used it for was mud doesn’t mean it’s completely useless. They’re really good for dry rocky trails like we have here on the llano. Open front diff, and a notoriously weak gov loc in the rear doesn’t make for a good mud truck either. When I say you misused it, I mean that you bought the wrong truck for what you needed. So you were using it where it doesn’t excel. There’s nothing wrong with 24v, it’s actually better, your glow plugs hear quicker, and your starters a hell of a lot stronger. Your starter bolts were breaking because of cheap bolts, nothing more.

  25. John Korn said:

I might be talking to you in the future lol. Seriously…

  26. Jeff Plummer said:

First car on the list is a Prius no need to waste my time on the other 9 I’m sure restarted options

  27. Seth Pinson said:

It wasn’t a two piece flywheel, I do remember the flywheel had some kind of external weight on it. I didn’t use it only for mudding, I also tried to use it for daily driving and pulling average loads. It was mediocre in all aspects. The starter bolts I purchased were specifically the hardest I could find to hold the starter to the engine, 8.8 if I remember right. I also remember having to have the starter rebuilt twice because of it failing.

  28. Andrew Hays said:

I think a lot of people are not taking that into consideration.

Yea I know. Like today a few people were laughing at me because I was riding a bicycle and told one of those people that if emp knocks out your engine you’re either going to be riding a horse, bicycle or walking.

Alcohol requires a 10:1 air to fuel ratio where gasoline requires around a 15:1. So you would have ro reject it to get it to run right.
