Having your cell phone or any other device when SHTF is all well and good. Until the battery runs out. If you have no way to charge it, then essentially you have a $600 paperweight (and as smartphones get lighter and lighter, it may not even be good for that).
What you need, then, is a way to keep your electronics charged even when the power shuts down for good. You'll want a way to charge it that is portable and lightweight. For that, the most obvious method is to use solar energy.
The sun is going to keep on burning long after we are all dead and gone, and it's one of the few energy sources that we can all rely upon to show up day in and day out. You may as well put it to work for you.
