Imagine bugging out and trying to find food in the desert. If stranded in the wilderness without food, you could easily die depending on the desert. In the southwest, cacti are frequent in the desert. In particular, one cacti you can locate is the prickly pear, which also happens to be a great source of food.

The prickly pear has large pads that are used to store water and produce flowers. A cacti's stems are filled with barbed spines called glochids. Unfortunately, glochids will prick your tongue and skin and are a pain to remove, but the fruit once you can get to it is not only delicious but is also rich in fiber and can help stabilize your blood sugar levels.

There is also evidence that suggests that a prickly pear's pulp contains pectin which can help by getting rid of the “bad” cholesterol in your body.

So how do you eat a prickly pear without hurting yourself? Watch this fascinating video after the break as a prepper shows us how.
