While you may think a survival knife is just a big hefty blade for chopping down small saplings and sharpening them into spears, there are many other designs which are much more basic, yet much more well thought-out. Take the ulu, for example, which can be seen below.

While this knife may not win any beauty pageants, it's a knife that is much more focused on the actual usefulness of its design than the outward appearance. Its shape means it has a much longer surface area of the blade and requires much less energy to actually slice through whatever it's put toward.

It's an excellent blade for processing fish and game, and particularly skinning large game, which is exactly what it was used for. It's also a GREAT knife to have in the kitchen, and once you get ahold of one, you may not ever use anything else.

This is a great lesson on proper knife design that we don't get to see very often.
