When many people think of survival knives, they tend to picture large thick blades which can be used for chopping, stabbing, processing game, and for fighting and self-defense. The problem with this, though, is that when you try to make a knife that can do it all, you end up with one that can't really do anything well.

The other school of thought that many people picture with survival knives is the small bushcraft knives which are traditional in Scandinavian countries. These knives are excellent for small tasks but really aren't up to the challenge of larger wilderness jobs.

There is, however, another traditional knife design which many people forget about or aren't even aware of. This knife is the ulu. It's a blade which essentially looks like half a pizza cutter and has a wood, bone, or antler handle. It's the traditional blade of the Natives of the Pacific Northwest, and it's awesome.
