(Video) This Hammock Rain Setup is So Clever! Why Didn’t I Think of That Before?!

Many of us have already put up a hammock, utilizing trees, straps and, depending on your preference, making or purchasing either a canvass or nylon hammock. Yet there can be problems when it rains.

It is not just needing to set up your hammock under a shelter or even worrying about your straps letting loose do to water saturation.

The big problem is over time, maybe in just a few hours of constant rain, your ties or straps can get soaked and slowly the water drips and slides down into the hammock while you are sleeping.

No, it’s not a very comfortable way to wake up in the morning!

On the next page, we have a great tip for avoiding this problem. It’s simple and we really are surprised we did not think of this before!

I tie a little stick on a string and stick it in the bottle so it hangs from the string. Then tie the other end to an eye on my tarp, the weight draws the water to the string and follows the string down into the bottle.

It’s Virginia Creeper. Also the same name as my first girlfriend back in 1983.

On a slightly related topic, my first night out with my hammock was just below freezing – the underquilt worked like a charm. Can’t wait for our trip this year. I’ll have to keep this tip handy for my rainy trips – though I didn’t have an issue in Mt Rainier or Olympic NPs in the rain without this trick.

We do this with paracord strips and we have put the ends of the strips in bottles to collect the water… works like a charm.

Some of you condescending jerks forget that there are plenty of people who are new to hammock camping and appreciate this info. I am one of them. Simple and effective. I like it.

I got my first hammock a couple weeks ago and in my search, I came across this. I clicked on it and thought…. genius! This is useful info. Now, after reading all these posts, I feel like$#%&!@*for not being born with this info. I hate my parents, teachers and government for not bringing this to my attention sooner.

I never even considered this being an issue. I thought, I got my first hammock, my rain fly and my big net. Let’s roll. If I hadn’t stumbled onto this video, I would have been screwed as it poured my very first time using my hammock.

If I thought I knew everything like some do I would not even watch a video.
Why does it matter if many knew this already?
If it helped one person it was worth it.

Good information. I wonder if he knew he was touching poison ivy. Does rain water that touches poison ivy become contaminated?

The guys on here acting like they know everything are the first ones to get in trouble in the woods because they think they know everything. They are the ones you run into that have to explain why their gear is superior , the lie about mileage etc

A 2 page article to say prusik knots on your suspension? A simple picture would have also sufficed.

For anyone looking to learn to hammock camp, see http://www.hammockforums.net , read the book “the ultimate hang”, or watch shug’s videos on yootoob. This comment alone has more information than this entire article.

Actually the new hammocks come with carabiners and that in itself is the water break.

Wonder how many people who think that is poison ivy have gotten it because they have no idea what poison ivy looks like. I know what it looks like and avoid it like the plague. Leaves of 3 let it be. This has 5. And it isn’t shinny.
