In this day and age of refrigeration and pantries, the idea of building an underground cavern for fruits and vegetables is probably not something many think about. Even homesteaders, for the most part, buy or grow their veggies and fruits in the spring and then can foods for the winter.

However, there is a “new trend” where men and women are discovering the benefits of a root cellar, how they can keep their produce healthy in a cool storage bin for use when needed.

In other words, no need to wait or go hungry until spring. When the temperature warms, while you are growing those veggies, you already have a stash ready for use!

Yes, it is true that root cellars are not new. Pioneers and even you great grandfather were digging and building them before you were even a sparkle in your Mom and Dad’s eyes.

Over on the next page, we have an industrious man who is building his cellar and he give us all sort of information on how it’s done, the perfect temperature for certain fruits and vegetables, and we see the materials he uses for his build!
