The recession of 2008 – 2011 hit large swaths of the country extremely hard, particularly if you were a young person just starting out in adult-life or if your life was in the least bit of flux.

A shrinking job market and severely restrictive lending environment meant that for most, the option of buying or owning a home was remote – and that was if you had relatively decent credit.

That reality created a survival situation of sorts for those affected – how to secure a living space given banks were tightfisted, and because of that, landlords had their pick of tenants.
