A bowline knot is generally used to secure and tow things.
Our military uses it on land and sea as a quick and reliable way to secure a line to equipment, materials, supplies, even in some cases personnel.
It is used because it is a simple knot to tie, is very strong and just as important, even with a lot of tension placed on it, is easy to undo.
Normally, a person would secure a bowline knot with two hands, but if you do not have use of one of your hands, you can still easily (with practice) tie a bowline knot.
A good example of when this would come in handy is if you were stranded in the water and someone threw a lifeline to you.
The video on the next page will show you how to tie this simple knot using only one hand.
