These awesome lanterns are not a long-term solution for light, but rather for those situation where the power is out, but only for a few hours.

If you were to make several of these, you could easily light up an entire room enough to be able to move safely and you do not have to worry about batteries or any fire hazards (which come with using hurricane lamps or torches.)

Using the solar panel and LED from those cheap, solar powered garden or pathway lights, you can create an innovative lantern that can be used on a summer's night on the patio or to provide lighting in the aftermath of a power outage.

This does not suffice as a light source to do work, and its brightness is limited to the power of the LED, but in a shorter term power outage, they would work fine.
