Today's project is an easy DIY project that would come in handy in one of those “minor” survival situations – say a thunderstorm knocks out the power, and you need enough light to get round, but not so much as to illuminate an entire room.

They also look really cool when lit.

Using the solar panel and LED from cheap, solar fueled decorative lights, you can create a solar lantern that will provide light for hours.

You also will need glue and twine to anchor your solar panel and LED to a lantern casing (in this case, glass vases were used) and reflective materials (in this case, decorative rocks) to disperse the light.

If you are worried about water getting into the lantern part, you can use a glass casing slightly larger than the solar panel / LED and rubber bands (shown in the video).
