Proper fire-making skills are essential for any survival situation–it's not like regular camping where you can just dump a can full of gasoline on the wood and toss a match.

In survival fires, you have to take extra care of checking how damp the wood is, what kind of wood is used, how many ways you have of lighting the fire, and whether or not you intend to build a fire for cooking or warmth, or a little bit of both.

While there are many acceptable ways to build a fire so that it burns nice and hot and for a long period, few are as low-maintenance and as easy to build and light as the method introduced on the next page.
