If the US federal government considers something a threat then let's face it, then it's likely to be a lot more alarming situation than the government is revealing.
If you keep that in mind, the government — which includes many agencies and the military — has admitted that one huge threat in particular is an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP).
Whether something like this takes place due to terrorism or nuclear detonation or by chance caused by a meteorite, an EMP event would change everything as we know today.
If an EMP event were to happen, a major challenge to overcome would be transportation. Most of the vehicles today rely on electrical components and computers. That means if an EMP were to hit most cars would become mere hunks of rubber, plastic, and metal.

EMPs will not destroy vehicles. It may / MAY make them go dead, if running, but doesn’t destroy them. They will most likely recrank and run fine. The Government did a huge test back in the early 90s, using LOTS of different new vehicles, and NONE of them were harmed to the point that they wouldn’t recrank and do fine. In SOME cases there may be a fuse blown or a very small problem, but that’s it. So , NO you don’t have to build a farraday cage for your vehicle.
The only problem is gas. You can have a running vehicle but no way to pump gas

Prepping in general if you aren’t careful puts a target on you. when you are one of the haves, and the have nots out number you, it is always a problem. but anything you have that gives you an advantage needs to be weighed against the threat associated with it. having an emp resistant vehicle can give you options that you don’t have on foot. If you don’t have anywhere to go, it is a great back up if you have to flee. As long as you are careful, and not going out for sunday cruises it would be in my opinion a good thing to have.

Spare sets of relays, an alternator, starter, etc (parts using coiled wire) are vulnerable as well. Keep spares in a Faraday Cage, wouldn’t be a bad idea.

An EMP fries EVERYTHING electronic. If your vehicle is anything except for a basic diesel engine that can be push started, you are screwed. Period.

Not completely, If a nuclear weapon went of within 20 miles of a vehicle it may or may not effect the vehicle.. law enforcement has been working on a device called an Electromagnetic pulse gun or HPEMS… right now it is the size of a delivery truck and has only had limited success. Does not work on all vehicles and it only temporary shuts them down at best 50 meters. Anything built before 1980 without micro processors will not be effected. If a nuclear bomb went off 100 miles away the electrical discharge would be too insignificant to cause an issue.. You can Google it. Lots of research has been done.

To be completely honest, there has been a lot of research done on vehicles and electro-magnetic pulse. It turns out that in a majority of tests, vehicles with computer based controls, survived just fine during controlled EMP attacks. The worst that would happen would be the vehicle would stall. A turn of the key started it back up. The reason? The vehicle’s hood and engine compartment acted as a kind of faraday cage that was just enough to protect the electronics.
