Tips to Remember to Effectively Protect a Vehicle From an EMP

If the US federal government considers something a threat then let's face it, then it's likely to be a lot more alarming situation than the government is revealing.

If you keep that in mind, the government — which includes many agencies and the military — has admitted that one huge threat in particular is an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP).

Whether something like this takes place due to terrorism or nuclear detonation or by chance caused by a meteorite, an EMP event would change everything as we know today.

If an EMP event were to happen, a major challenge to overcome would be transportation. Most of the vehicles today rely on electrical components and computers. That means if an EMP were to hit most cars would become mere hunks of rubber, plastic, and metal.

It's important that you know what you should be looking for in a car so that it's EMP proof and on the next page you'll learn what to invest in before this life-altering event takes place.

the bottom line is an emp attack puts us in the dark ages and millions die

Crap article. Worse than useless for a noon and an eye roller for The Prepared.

Funny. During the tests in the 50’s very few of the things blown out HAD computer chips. Hundreds of miles inland.

You do realize that, at the appropriate time, if it moves; it is seized. Probably at gunpoint, by “police.”

Most items in those tests were in the Blast range. There is nothing you can do in the blast range an EMP is like a lightning flash and whoomp no Smartphone.

You’re probably correct on that however it’s pretty rare where I live and even police in around and near me are basically on the same side as the majority of the rest of us and there are even though they might be policemen or Highway Patrol officers there also farmers and Family Guys

Find better manual than haynes, they suck. Motors manuals much betterr, cost more, but get what you pay for

It will take a little time for it to sink in for most people, gives a “get home” window

Use a faraday box on a larger scale. I solid copper one I have one for my I phone when I don’t want to let anyone know WTF I am.

By an extra PCM and put it in a Faraday cage. It’s cheaper in the short term and long term than retrofitting a fuel injected car with a carburetor.

Carburetors are very temperamental, get worse fuel mileage and make less power when fuel would be scarce.

I don’t think a mechanic wrote this article. How do you expect a car to start without a negative terminal or a ground wire?

Can points survive an EMP blast better than a high energy ignition system that operated off high voltage, I doubt it.

You might want to look up “wood gas” used during WW2 when gas was rationed or no where to be found.

  13. Bruce Cook said:

Contrary to what some are saying here, an EMP is, by definition, a momentary event, hence the term PULSE. longer duration events are not a pulse and are excluded by definition (these would be things along the lines of an energy beam weapon, jamming, etc.).

Solid state circuit’s are prone to emp , points and condencers, not so much , I’m assuming you probably think Chevy hei is not effected , you’re wrong

Look, in this post emp situation$#%&!@*would get really bad. When you are the only person tooling around in a motor vehicle you would very quickly paint a target on your back. Someone is bound to hear that car and decide to try and take it. Enjoy scrounging for fuel and parts for that vehicle. I would still rather pedal. Call me crazy if you like.

Patrick Behl A CME is a different animal from an EMP. While the two are similar in some aspects, EMP generally refers to a weapon created pulse and CME is a natural phenomenon.

But yes, a CME could last a LONG time and have planetary wide consequences. They are however, much less powerful than most weapon produced EMP’s. Still enough to screw things up, and they have in the past, long before the massive influx of sensitive micro electronics.

It won’t matter if you have a vehicle that survives an EMP when none of the gas stations are able to pump gas. And modern gas has a shelf life of maybe 6 months because of all of the additives.

An EMP will all but put us back in the stone age.

I’ll chime in. I’m not a prepper, survivalist, or anything like that. However, I live in such a way that if the world goes to$#%&!@*I will have what I need.

I am a master automotive tech, nothing on a car I can’t rebuild, replace, refinish, or repair. I grew up on a farm in BFE Nebraska so i know how to do far more than just fix cars. I’m ex military too, loaded cargo planes, logistics is a big thing.

Well anyway, I run a few of my old cars, and a newer one, on home made ethanol. I make it with maple tree sap and cattails. It runs without issue in carbureted and EFI, and despite what you have probably heard, it doesn’t hurt anything. I have years of experience and testing to prove it.

I have a 7kw generator that runs on ethanol, gasoline, or methane. I can convert it in a few minutes to any of them. Methane is incredibly easy to produce, harvest and use. Anyone can make ethanol easily as well. Anyone can get an engine to run on either fuel with a little bit of knowledge.

Why do I do all of this? Because I like to make silly amounts of power and drive my old cars often. I got crippled in the desert back in 04, so I have limited funds, but plenty of time. So I invest the time in making things I need, gardening, building, producing fuel, electricity, and every energy need I have right here with what I have around me. Its fun for me too.

How an EMP kills vehicles is the same principle we use to make electricity. When a magnetic field is cut by a wire, the wire receives a charge. When it is either a large or multiple magnetic waves, more electricity is produced. Electronics work on millionths of volts, and even a small magnetic pulse can fry those circuits, because it easily overloads them. Any complete circuit can be overloaded, even if the entire system/appliance isn’t charged or on. Individual components can be damaged even if the main circuits aren’t. Its really interesting stuff.

I own a bike too. Problem is I live 13 miles from anything, and we get 150-300 inches of snow every winter. A bike is a temporary solution at best here.

This article is useless. If we have an emp attack and you have a vehicle that will operate, it will only make you a target. Then good luck with getting fuel. Bio diesel my$#%&!@* Reality people. If you have stock piles you are a target.

Most vehicles are already protected against emp. Remember, the vehicles metal body acts as a Faraday cage.

A study was done at white sands (I can’t remember how many different vehicles off hand, but I think it was around 100), most simply shut down but we’re immediately restarted. Some were completely unaffected. And, only a couple were damaged.

I do have a link to the pdf of the full report.

Those tests where done over 70 years ago. Wonder if the science evolved to a higher level of emp. ??

I don’t see how it matters every road will be clogged with disabled vehicles. The world will be something out of the movie Road Warrior inside of 5 hours. Someone would shoot you for your vehicle probably almost instantly. Not exactly like you’re going to be cruising down the road listening to your George Michaels tapes.

You should have a winch on her because if you get a loaded truck this size stuck your walking.

  26. Joseph Tracy said:

My truck has a twin Ram dump bed assembly as well as a PTO driven winch with 200 feet of heavy gauge steel rope I’ve driven very easily through a foot-and-a-half deep snow on multiple occasions and the truck worked in the construction business in Estes Park Colorado climbing up and down the mountains and pushing a snow plow in the winners often times going at elevations above Timberline it’s a good faithful old truck

  27. Phillip Graham said:

It is important to note the human body is a machine that runs on electricity. If you’re close enough to the EMP for it to get your vehicle I doubt you’ll have anymore worries.

  28. Brian Mcguire said:

the only Electronic Ignition that is Truly emp proof is using an Ignition box such as a hyfire or msd box with a points distributor for the trigger device, then if the box fails you just bypass it.

  29. Thomas Andrew Barquist said:

Unless it is parked in a faraday cage every vehicle will be disabled. The newest generation of EMTs are strong enough to melt copper wire

  30. Thomas Andrew Barquist said:

Besides no electricity no gas. No gas is not your problem. You don’t even know what your problem is. You want a hint? It is water. Without electricity you will have no access to water.

  31. Gordon Braithwaite said:

Really the federal government considers global warming a bigger threat than terrorism, and that is laughable.

  32. Paul Haines said:

I think there might be only two ways for me to avoid being debilitated by an EMP.

First, buy an old deisel powered pickup truck, place it in an old steel shipping container, and bury the whole damned thing. Of course, digging it out without machinery will be a pain in the$#%&!@*..

Second keep and maintain draft horses and wagons for them to pull.

  33. Rickey Stoot said:

Easiest way to avoid an EMP

Get a vehicle that has a carborator.

Fuel ejection requires a computer, carb does not
