If the US federal government considers something a threat then let's face it, then it's likely to be a lot more alarming situation than the government is revealing.

If you keep that in mind, the government — which includes many agencies and the military — has admitted that one huge threat in particular is an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP).

Whether something like this takes place due to terrorism or nuclear detonation or by chance caused by a meteorite, an EMP event would change everything as we know today.

If an EMP event were to happen, a major challenge to overcome would be transportation. Most of the vehicles today rely on electrical components and computers. That means if an EMP were to hit most cars would become mere hunks of rubber, plastic, and metal.

    Walt Morgan I agree absolutely with that . But the military vehicle thing should be extended to all situations , and be seen as a good rule to follow . Even camo clothing and bags can make a person a target , situational awareness on or about its use is important . Basic black or grey , for all things survival related , is a pretty useful rule to have .

    I’m with you. 1971 F250. 360 V-8 with a 4speed. Dana 60 with locker. Still using points. All fuel components included carb gaskets have been replaced with air craft grade so it can run ethanol.

    I have to agree with Roger. I’ve read so much about vehicles and and EMP or CME. I really don’t think anyone knows what exactly will happen to a vehicle. It’s all theory at this point.

    I have been told that even the battery in ur watch won’t even work if there is a emp attack. That it destroys all copper wires etc also…so nothing electronic will work. We will immediately be in the 19th century. This is just what I have heard about it anyway. I read it on the Internet which according to Abraham Lincoln it’s not always accurate…

    I used to own an old Mercedes 190D. Powered by a 3 cylinder diesel. The neat thing about it was it would run with no electric stuff at all. Was standard shift so could be jump started by getting it rolling and popping the clutch in 2nd gear. To start it you pulled a lever on the dash which opened the fuel valve. To shut it off you pushed the lever in, shutting off the fuel and the engine would shudder to a stop. It did have a key which activated the starter motor, lights and other electrical things but which served no purpose to keep the engine running. Something like this would still run post emp

    Read the report that was done on the testing of vehicles at White Sands, New Mexico. The results weren’t as bad as is often promulgated about vehicle vulnerabilities to EMP… Some cars weren’t affected at all, some simply stopped and had to be restarted, and some were damaged. Depends on many variables. While the premise of the article is well intended, do you own research. It may be cheaper for you to have another regular vehicle stored in a shielded environment, than for you to get a vehicle and do everything that it often cited to harden it against EMP.

    In my opinion, you should consider other alternatives as well, horses, bicycles, etc.

    Have you thought about getting home from work to your family? Or going to retrieve a family member that is away from you?

    All serious things to ponder.

    Keep in mind: if a severe EMP occurs from either a Solar Flare or an air burst nuclear weapon, you will have a few days AT THE MOST before it all comes apart. Depending upon where you live and how dependent on technology your local residents are.

    Most grocery stores in our Just In Time logistics systems only have three days worth of food.

    Their EMP gun is actually a ultra high density capacitor that peovides both a positive and a ground for the event. A EMP will only sopply a positive. If you watched myth busters with the lightning episode you will see the car is not effected

    This is mine it is a 1966 Chevy Viking I would strongly recommend something similar it has a cargo capacity on its bed of roughly 12,000 pounds plus is capable of Towing nearly anything they were made from about 1955 through 1966 with versions continuing well into the 1970s they have a very simple electrical system with points ignition any 12 volt battery over 500 cold cranking amps is capable of starting the engine mine has a large 6 cylinder stovebolt engine that is very simple to work on and easy to reach from any side above or below the likelihood of traveling at any kind of high-speed given the scenario set forth in this post is pretty unlikely due to poor condition of Roads large amounts of damaged and abandoned vehicles and other refuse and another aspect of this particular vehicle is it has fairly good fuel economy given the size that it is it averages between 15 and 18 miles per gallon on flat ground 15 loaded 18 Empty of course there were several different engines available and is similar in size strength weight rating and structure to Ford and Chrysler made products of the same era of which are going to have similar characteristics and if changing an engine is something one would wish to do whether it would be to put a diesel in for increased fuel economy or anything like that there is ample room to put just about any engine you could dream up under the hood

    The main reason to have an operating vehicle would be to get home if you are any distance away. With each passing hour and day the danger will grow whether you are in a vehicle or on foot, so best to get home as quickly as possible.

    The second thing; if/when we get hit with an EMP it will most likely be a Super EMP weapon. Several countries now have the tech including NK. Virtually all the test information available is based using current levels induced by a “normal” nuke or around 50KV, Super EMP nukes are at 250KV or possibly/probably greater. So, don’t assume anything will be safe.

    The damage done will be based upon the strength of the pulse but also your proximity to the burst. The closer the greater the damage, the further away the less the damage.

    There are some actual steps you can take to try to get your vehicle running again. First identify the vital components that could need replacing – Get a Haynes Manual, get those spare components including fuses and keep them with the vehicle in a Faraday Cage/Bag/Box – unattached, unpowered components will not be as susceptible. After the event; first completely disconnect the battery then wait for about 20 minutes for the various capacitors to discharge – replace those fuses while waiting. Reconnect the battery, get in the car, press the gas peddle 1 time completely to the floor and release and try to start the car. If it starts it will run rough for awhile but also wait another 20 minutes for the various controls to reset. If it doesn’t start go back to step one and while the battery is disconnected replace those other components you have spares for, then try to start. It will or it won’t, but depending upon your situation, it may be worth the time trying.

    For how long? Last I checked people aren’t pouring fuel stabilizer into their gas tanks of the cars they drive. That stuff won’t last forever. Eventually the gas will be gone, the car will break to a point you can’t fix it and you will be looking for a bicycle.

    In the 1890’s the sun put out a solar flare that melted the copper telegraph lines in the U.S….it’s all what if’s and buts …reality is you won’t know where your gonna be with what resources or how many kids or elderly which change any equation ..so educate your self and get used to things changing quickly want practice go now to your power box ( breaker box) and cut the power watch your wife and kids drive you nuts in 2 hours …good practice ” the more you sweat in peacetime the less you blend in war ” ..col.chesty puller, u.s.m.c.!
