The Best Non-Perishable Items We Should be Storing – They’ll Actually Outlive Us!

food to store

Before the days of modern refrigeration and pounds of preservatives being thrown into nearly all of our food, people knew precisely what foods always to have on hand in case they were ever unable to go to the market for a long time or needed to load up their pantries for winter.

The foods they relied on were often food which could be stored nearly indefinitely, and made up a bulk of their diets, even in times of plenty, simply because they were often cheap and easily obtained.

These survival foods are often still cheap and plentiful today, and should make up a bulk of your survival cache. Sure, you can freeze nearly anything to keep for a long period, but what if your power goes out or your freezer goes down?

You should always have a backup plan in place for such an occasion, and the foods on the next page should definitely be your first choice.

What’s the best way to store dried beans? I have stores them in org. Package in a lid on five gallon bucket. But when I went to use a pack (after a year) to kinda circulate my stock, the beans didn’t cook right. They were still hard and inedible after slow cooking for almost two hours.

I’m not an expert but cooking died beans it is best to soak overnight. Then slow cook all day. That is what I’ve learned with ham bone soup. I’ve never had a bean that cooked in to hours unless pressure cooked. I hope this helps.

They didn’t list wheat berries. I have them packed in aluminum sales bags. They will last til needed. Wheat can be ground or boiled and is a life staple.
