The Best Non-Perishable Items We Should be Storing – They’ll Actually Outlive Us!

food to store

As a survival buff, you may be prepared to load up on MREs to last a lifetime. After all, they can sit on the shelf for nearly 20 years or more without degrading. If you're middle-aged this type of food is ideal to store for SHTF. But the foods below will last much longer, and will be much cheaper, to boot.

1. Staple survival foods that are non-perishable
Rice: white, wild, jasmine, Arborio and basmati (brown rice does not keep forever)
Hardtack crackers/biscuits
2. Other survival foods that are non-perishable
Honey
Molasses
Maple syrup
Dried lentils
Dried beans
Dried split peas
Dry mix Jello
3. Survival foods that if frozen are non-perishable
Dried pasta
Noodles
Dried fruits (such as raisins, dried cranberries, dried cranberries, dried cherries, dried apricots, dried mangoes, dates, dried blueberries, dried plums, banana chips, figs)
Instant/freeze-dried coffee

4. Base ingredients that are non-perishable
Corn starch
Baking soda
Corn syrup
5. Seasonings that are non-perishable
Salt
Sugar
Pepper
Spices
Dried herbs
Pure flavor extracts (pure vanilla extract, etc.)
6. Condiments that are non-perishable
Vinegar (white, apple, balsamic, raspberry, rice wine, and red wine vinegar)
Worcestershire sauce (unopened)
7. Survival drinks that are non-perishable
Any alcohol over 10% that does not contain eggs, milk, and other dairy derivatives (ex. not Baileys, Tia Maria, etc.) should typically last forever in a stockpile.
Wine
Spirits
Liquors

Chances are you have all of these food items in one form or another somewhere in your house. Get more of them! All of these survival foods are extremely cheap compared to the marketed MREs and freeze dried meals you find on prepper websites and in camping stores.

What that cheapness means is that you can stock up on far more food for far less money, making you more prepared in the long run. It also gives you more options as far as how you want to prepare those foods. Do yourself a favor and stock up on a few survival cookbooks, too.

What’s the best way to store dried beans? I have stores them in org. Package in a lid on five gallon bucket. But when I went to use a pack (after a year) to kinda circulate my stock, the beans didn’t cook right. They were still hard and inedible after slow cooking for almost two hours.

I’m not an expert but cooking died beans it is best to soak overnight. Then slow cook all day. That is what I’ve learned with ham bone soup. I’ve never had a bean that cooked in to hours unless pressure cooked. I hope this helps.

They didn’t list wheat berries. I have them packed in aluminum sales bags. They will last til needed. Wheat can be ground or boiled and is a life staple.
