Some caveats for using this method: You must know your left from your right. If you do not follow the instructions carefully, you will end up confusing the directions and possibly reversing them. This gives you a general directional guide – it is not a precise measurement tool. This works in the Northern Hemisphere.
Getting lost is bad enough. Not knowing what direction to get “un-lost” is worse.
Luckily, if you can detect a shadow from the sun – even on a cloudy day, you have a relatively easy way of getting your West – East Line and then deducing North and South.
The materials you need for this are equally as simple – a three-foot-long stick and two rocks.
To see how to use this method for determining your general direction, please check out the instructions on the next page.
