Living aboard a small sail boat and tackling the vastness of the ocean is about as good as it gets in terms of quality of life and as challenging as it gets in terms of self-sufficiency.

There are a million things that can go wrong, relatively few that can go right and your margin of error is about as close to zero as humanly possible.

Guess the weather wrong and you can end up with a storm that threatens your boat. Fail to maintain your engine and you can end up stranded. Take the ocean for granted, get careless and you can end up dead.

Everywhere you look, there is something looking to snag you, trip you or pull you overboard.

In terms of self-sufficiency, however, it is about as good as it gets and while living on a boat is a hybrid situation, it teaches you a lot about what it truly means to be “on your own.”
