Man Manages to Survive During the Yukon Winter by Using a Camper Van

living-in-an-rv

The answer is simple. He built a wood stove before he left Halifax and put it in the van! Still, even with a space as small as a camper insulation is needed so check out what he did next!

Insulating the Van
Next he needed to figure out how to keep the heat inside the van.
“I was not keen on using traditional insulation, because at that point I might as well just build a little shack, so I came to the conclusion that straw bales would be my best bet”, Cud writes on his website.
Cud and a friend set about clearing an area to make room for the camper van. They then laid 2″x 6″ pieces of wood on the ground and creating a platform for the van to sit on.

By November, temperatures in the Yukon had dipped down to -25 degrees F,  but Cud was still warm and toasty in his camper van.

Afterward, they merely placed his stove in the van and everything was toasty! Or, at least as warm as it could be in the Yukon in the middle of winter!

Again, it takes a special kind of man to decide to do something like this and we are sure he has his reasons. If he was testing himself for survival reasons then we say go for it, Cud!

I’m not kidding, I live in Fairbanks. There is a guy who lives up near the Yukon river in an old station wagon with a small wood stove in it. He has three of these. I don’t know how he does it. It was negative thirty eight a few days ago.

I’m intrigued by the lifestyle. Just don’t know if I have the resolve to do it unless I have to.

I was picturing that being a mounted Heavy Machine gun coming out of that van.
