Knife Laws by State Preppers Should be Aware Of

a bunch of knives

If you are a hunter for fisherman (or woman,) or a survivalist, chances are you have your local, state and federal firearms regulations and rights memorized.

Less known are the regulations and the rights we possess as they pertain to owning, carrying and using knives.

It sounds crazy, but just about every state has laws that dictate the type of knife you can buy, own, carry and how you can use it.

It is a product of an over-reaction to crime back in the '70's and 80's in most cases and like most political and government over-reactions, many laws have been repealed, modified or amended, which has, predictably, created a patchwork of rules that vary from state to state.

That is why you must know the knife laws that pertain to your state and any state that you visit; on the next page, we cover many of the knife laws that will affect you.

I’m disappointed in Texas. They seem to have forgotten the Alamo. Jim Bowie did not die there to have his namesake knife made illegal to carry.

Knife laws are stupid I don’t even go by the knife laws as long as your obeying the laws and being a good law abiding citizen then there’s nothing to worry about.

The Canadian Criminal Code criminalizes the possession of knives which open automatically. Section 84(1) defines “a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device attached to or in the handle of the knife” as a prohibited weapon.[13] Only persons who have been granted exemption by the Royal Canadian Mounted Policethrough the Canadian Firearms Program are allowed to possess (but not acquire) prohibited weapons.

If a person is found in unauthorized possession of a prohibited knife by any law enforcement officer, the person is liable to a maximum of 5 years in jail and the weapon being seized. The Crown can then apply to a Provincial Court judge for the weapon to be forfeited and destroyed. The import and export of prohibited weapons is also strictly regulated and enforced by the Canada Border Services Agency.[14]

    Examples of prohibited knives include:

any knife, including a switchblade, orbutterfly knife with a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife;Constant Companion (belt-buckle knife);finger rings with blades or other sharp objects projecting from the surface;push daggers.[13][15]

Manually-opened or ‘one-handed’ opening knives, including spring-assisted knives, that do not fall within the categories listed as prohibited weapons definition are legal to own, import and use.[16]

There is no length restriction on carrying knives within the Criminal Code, but there is a prohibition against carrying a knife if the possessor intends to carry for a purpose dangerous to public peace or for the purpose of committing a criminal offense.[17]

Here in MI you can open or conceal any knife as long as the blade length is under 4 inches.

Please show me where you found that it is illegal to own a knife in SC, I looked up the code and found this: SECTION 16-23-460. Carrying concealed weapons; forfeiture of weapons.

    (A) A person carrying a deadly weapon usually used for the infliction of personal injury concealed about his person is guilty of a misdemeanor, must forfeit to the county, or, if convicted in a municipal court, to the municipality, the concealed weapon, and must be fined not less than two hundred dollars nor more than five hundred dollars or imprisoned not less than thirty days nor more than ninety days.

    (B) The provisions of this section do not apply to:

    (1) A person carrying a concealed weapon upon his own premises or pursuant to and in compliance with Article 4, Chapter 31 of Title 23; or

    (2) peace officers in the actual discharge of their duties.

    (C) The provisions of this section also do not apply to rifles, shotguns, dirks, slingshots, metal knuckles, knives, or razors unless they are used with the intent to commit a crime or in furtherance of a crime.
From what I read, the police can not take a knife from someone unless it is being used in a crime.

The article didn’t cover Tennessee because they said the laws are too complicated. As of 2015, every type, size, length, and style of knife is legal in Tennessee. Open or concealed. Switchblades, daggers, or swords. No problemo. They don’t care what you carry or how.
Just don’t commit a crime with a knife or they will bury you in jail.

Or just get rid of it and not replace it with anything. Why cut out one kind of cancer when you put another in its place?
