As we have progressed through the last century and a quarter, all of us have benefited from profound change.
Stuff we viewed as “new and exciting,” like CD-ROMs are barely known to our kids. Our parents, on the other hand, barely had color television, but their folks relied on radio for a lot of their entertainment and news.
Work your way back, all the way to the late 1800's and each successive generation has experienced stuff a generation before was unfathomable.
Some of that though, are skills needed to make basic life stuff like belts, simple clothes, forging metal, etc.
We simply lack those skills in this day and age and if automation ever stopped, say in a massive survival crisis, what we have is what we have until we relearn those skills.
