How to Bake Bread in a Coffee Can. Try it, it’s Pretty Cool!

bread in a coffee can

If you need a healthy form of energy and carbs your salvation is a merely a five to ten pound can of Folgers© away! This, along with some raw components, is a fun and easy way to make bread, something you can teach your kids, and it will go a long way in keeping the family fed during those lean days!

The Basic Recipe
This recipe is for your standard sized coffee can, and you should use one that has a removable plastic lid. You can always scale up or down according to your particular requirements.
3 (three) 1 Pound Empty Coffee Cans
2 Packets of yeast
2 Tablespoons of sugar
1 Tablespoon of salt
½ Teaspoon of baking soda
5 Cups of flour
A sprinkle of cornmeal
1 Cup of warm water
1 ½ Cups of milkTake the baking soda and dissolve it in 1 tablespoon of water and set aside. Combine the yeast and sugar in a bowl, add the water and then mix. Let it stand for about 15 minutes so the yeast will activate and expand. Meanwhile, grease the inside and bottom of the coffee can with some shortening, or use some non-stick cooking spray. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the greased surfaces and shake out the excess.Slowly add and mix the salt along with 3 cups of flour and 1 cup of milk. Once it has been mixed thoroughly, add the remaining ingredients and continue to blend. The mixture will not be as thick as pizza dough or as runny as pancake batter. It will be a bit sticky and gooey, and this is okay. Pour the mixture evenly into the coffee cans. Don’t worry about filling them all the way up, as the dough will rise and fill in most of the empty spaces.

You then want to place lids on the cans and let rest for about an hour for the dough to rise. The lids will come off once the dough has risen enough. Preheat oven to 375 and place the cans inside. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Check the bread with a knife to be certain it’s done then, after removing them from the oven, turn them over and pop them out of the cans. Let them cool on a rack for a while. Eat your tasty bread right away or freeze for later consumption!

You can get similar results if you bake the bread next to a fire or makeshift stove. Practice makes perfect. Give it a try and let us know how you did and how it tastes!

My mom used to make this. When it was hot and fresh right out of the oven, it was amazing. Gonna have to try this…now only if I can find a metal coffee can. You think I can make mini bites in a Keurig Cup?

The ingredients say corn meal but the directions say corn starch. Which is it? I may try this.

If you’re reduced to baking”survival bread” in a coffee can, chances are the risk of cancer from paint is pretty low on your list of potential danger

No! Make sure the coating on the inside of the can has been removed either by burning it out or some other way. If not it will make you sick.
