Find Out if You Own One or More of These Highly Recommended SHTF Guns

man aiming a rifle

Anyone who is accustomed to the survival lifestyle knows that firearms are an important aspect to making it through when the grid goes down or you're experiencing a SHTF moment.

You may not necessarily need a gun for self-defense, but you will need it to hunt, and in reality, that means like your other tools, you need to own the correct one so you can stay alive.

It's also vital that you have a few firearms that'll meet the challenges that you'll face when SHTF. And trust me, you are bound to experience at least a few unexpected moments when all hell breaks loose.

Keep in mind that while rifles do a lot, it's difficult to have just one for your needs.

For example, a .22 won't cut it if you're hunting big game, and using a shotgun also won't work if you're out in the wilderness trying to catch smaller game. You should know what you're going to hunt ahead of time and which guns should be in your possession while you're hunting.

Let me guess. Ruger 10/22, AR-15, and a 12 or 20 gauge break open shotgun.

What a crock of sh!t! Lol. The ar15 is used by 0 military’s anywhere on the planet. “All mighty” my$#%&!@*

  3. Cam Mourer said:

Why not go with a rifle that share the same ammo as your handgun?

    Lol, negative on the 5.56…
    .22 check, 9mm check, 7.62 check. Lofl.

Oh wait, that was before the tragic boating accident where I lost all guns…

  5. DB Renolds said:

Did you forget the lol at the end? I’m working on the 7.62 btw.

  6. Dave Allan said:

Lol, errr… Lets go for nope on the first thing, and I’m on the 5.56, urban version. We’ll talk about the 7.62 build for you.

A long-slide .45 ACP, a bolt-action .308 Win, and a Triple Threat with barrel insert kit. Maybe an M4-variant too.

Ok. The guns suggested are all viable. Might I point out that a 12 gauge is a large heavy gun for a kid to use, and, ladies and gentlemen, there is no guarantee that you’ll be there when needed. You might be at work, 50 miles away (what is the average commute in your area?), you might be dead or wounded. A light 20 gauge will kick like a big 12, gun mass counts in recoil operation. So let us say that you are camping / hunting. You and your wife are out and get hit by a flood/stampede/rockfall /drunken driver. Then the SHTF. 2 kids girl 12. Boy 10. If you have equipped them with knowledge and kit they have a chance.
This is about firearms however. I suggest a light scoped . 22 lr rifle and a .410 shotgun. Light adequate for small to medium game. In the case of the shotgun the same, or nearly so velocity as a 12 gauge, fewer pellets sure but how many pellets hit? A .410 probably only has 3 or 4 . 32 size pellets in buckshot, so the kids get closer. A simple .22 will gain small game or thin skinned game up to about goat sized if the shooter does his/her job. Head, neck spine shots at 25 yards maximum. Pick a gun the kids can use easily and well. A . 22 Hornet (improved if you like, it’ll still shoot standard ammo ok) in a single shot, say a Martini or bolt repeater. Or even one of those combo guns with a 22 wmr or lr barrel over a 410

Pick gun the kid can use. Then make sure the kid is trained in safe procedures as much as in good shooting skills. Then if you’re not around you can be confident the kid will react well, go to the rendezvous, stay put, whatever your drill is and still be able to feed themselves.

All arguments aside, as a half assed prepper with military experience and a budget, it goes like this. My old Remington 870. 12 ga. With a bandoleer of mixed loads. A 1911 .45 with defense loads. A Marlin .22 with tube mag. Holds 8 more rounds thsn a 10/22. And a 30/30 rifle for bigger game. Ya’ll keep you ARs and good luck,

Im taking my AR15 for deer hunting dont hate the player. Hate the game

  12. Jamie Lynch said:

Militarys use the M16, the only thing that is the same is the ammo and furniture. Again, NO military uses an ar15, it is NOT the same weapon …223/5.56 is not a big enough round to ethically hunt with unless you are inside 25 yards.

  13. Joshua D Wuttke said:

It’s the same weapon and same thing as the m16 just doesn’t have auto or burst

  14. Joshua D Wuttke said:

And 556223 can shoot a deer just fine. Doesn’t mean that a ar15 is only chambered in 556

  15. Jamie Lynch said:

I’m sorry, I have to look at every story like this and worry about my rights being taken away. The fact is, no ar15 has ever seen a battle field and stating it is used by the military is just plain stupid. I know they aren’t, I own a 6.8spc, and it is illegal to shoot deer in many states using .223. It is a decent weapon, but claiming it is the be all do all is ridiculous. Yes if you shoot someone with it they will likely die. All I’m saying is crap like this feeds the anti gun lobby, and there are better choices out there.

  16. Clint Williams said:

If you dont shoot more than 25 yds, dont bother with a rifle at all, much less an AR.
As stated, it is the same weapon minus 3rd burst. US favored for half a century, mainly for its accuracy. Its cheaper to use discriminate fire vs. “Spray n pray” (also why we use 3rd burst vs full auto)
Regarding your point on ethics: although its a small cal. Theres a lot of$#%&!@*behind it, giving it range (500m easy); also its a tumbling round, meaning once it hits the target it sort of bounces around inside the body, off bones etc. until finding its exit. Whatever path is b/t entry and exit wounds is pureed by the tumble. This actually makes it more ethical to fire this at +25m so the rd slows enough to tumble more upon entry. It was actually a factor in Somalia, but I digress..

The biggest complaint on AR has always been tiny parts that all have to be kept clean. In the field this can be debilitating. Its why everyone else loves the AK so much; its not nearly as accurate, but more rugged in the field.

  17. Joshua D Wuttke said:

All of them went to full auto, 3 round burst is gone now.

Lol who Is going take your ar15 away from you? It’s the same rifle in fact bam the lower from a m16 a2 will bolt up any of the ar15 uppers

  18. Joshua D Wuttke said:

100 yards no problem for killing a deer . Shot placement is everything. Perhaps you can’t shoot or just enjoy living in fear.

  19. Cam Mourer said:

Sure if you enjoying looking like a retard why not an AK pistol or the 45-70 darenger.

  20. Jamie Lynch said:

Clint, 500m?!? You do know the 5.56 will drop over 60″ at that range and has under 200ftlbs of energy right? Ethical kill power has always been 1000ftlbs+ the 5.56 doesn’t even have that at 100yrds. Tumbling round? Wtf?

Joshua, you are correct, they will pin together. Where are you going to get one, and how are they the same? Can you explain that? Please tell me what makes them the SAME rifle.

  21. Jamie Lynch said:

Yes, you’re right, I’m a terrible shot, and I only own one gun, living in constant fear. My 6.8spc have the same energy at 250 yards as the 5.56 has at the muzzle. Feeding the idiots trying to take away your rights is just stupid.

  22. Michael Lessick said:

20 gauge is enough gun for any purpose, with half the recoil and noise of a 12….I use solid shot (“sluggers”) for deer and #6 shot for everything else…Always include a brush for removing lead deposits in your cleaning kit if you use slugs….modern shot is steel.

  23. Kyle Nuetzman said:

    I use a mossberg 500 flex, marlin 30-30, springfield xd mod 2 in 9mm and a sr1911 I also have a mongolian bow

  24. Chuck Brunotte said:

Windell Holland, not me. I was saying my Marlin mod.60 has tubular magazine holds 18 long rifle rounds…8 more than a 10/22.

  25. Joshua D Wuttke said:

Comparison of calibers is fun but the m16 is just a ar15 everything is exactly the same minis the full auto.

  26. Cam Mourer said:

Neck beard? That’s probably just another chin I’m a fat guy. But my problem with a drako or an AR pistol is practically and mobility and I’ve never seen a good holster for them

  27. Jamie Lynch said:

You do know you can not make an Ar15 full auto without mill work right? The receivers are not the same.

  28. Chuck Brunotte said:

Windell Holland…I guess I like the tubular is its what I had as a kid. And there isnt a long mag hanging up on stuff. More streamlined.

  29. Cam Mourer said:

My point exactly at that point stick with the full size rifle.

  30. Jamie Lynch said:

How am I the one missing the point? It is not a military weapon, this article says it is. Why would I go to your mom’s basement?
