Figuring Out the Most Reliable Transportation After an EMP

open road

For those of you that do not know, an EMP is an electromagnetic pulse, caused by a sudden burst of electromagnetic energy. An EMP can damage electronics that you have in your home, or in more serious circumstances, cause damage to buildings, vehicles, and even the landscape itself.

Lightning can cause an EMP, as can nuclear weapons. We've all seen evidence of the power of an EMP – think of a power outage by lightning or the ruin of a city struck by a nuclear explosion.

In the event of an EMP, it can be difficult to identify which means of transportation will still be reliable. Will cars still work? Airplanes? Or will you have to walk everywhere? Depending on the strength of an EMP, you might be extremely limited in your options.

Um EMPs will burn out most modern circuitry… Your solar panels may survive, but the controllers, etc. will NOT. I plan to walk in the eventuality this happens.

1st gen Dodge Cummins with full 90 gallon fuel tank. Only need a jumper wire from the battery to the starter and its up and running.

Will solar charger such as Goal Zero, Aukey, etc still works post EMP?

Might I suggest, including a few good things from the article with the post.

Mountain bikes. No heavy unreliable walmart bikes either, get a decent yet not overly complex aluminum frame mountain bike, no rear suspension necessary, but forks are nice.

For those with horses, all you should need to keep a horse going is grass and water from the creeks and ponds.

for me it is a bicycle, take the back roads less used and keep to the sides incase someone is raceing to get the hell out of Dodge, this way I can also hide in the trees if I hear them from afar.

recumbent trike…and they can pull a trailer better than other bikes.

Walking might be the safest way to go. If you are on the road you will get ambushed, or stopped by FEMA and put in a camp.

Most riding lawn mowers, as well as A T V’s, motorcycles, and cars today have electronic ignitions. Those probably won’t stand a EMP. I have an OLD (1973) diesel tractor that will run without a battery, alternator, or any electricity at all IF you can get it started.

  11. Ron Hosea said:

Ronald Boor Some of the newer diesel tractors have electronic fuel metering, electric charge pumps for the injectors, and other electronic gadgets that may be affected by an EMP. I don’t know, but I’m not going to bet my life on it. My old tractor has a syncronized transmission. You can roll it down a hill to start it.

Bicycles work pretty well too. And mountain bicycles don’t have to stay on the roads. Add some carry capacity on the back.

Does anyone know what a faraday cage is? You can do it to a vehicle…….

Double bike. Goes in snow and gravel and can carry people and small children. One pedals and steers and the other pedals and rides “shotgun”.

    Ummmmm… Gee, what a hard question…

If your transportation doesn’t eat grass, then you have no transportation.

Okay these guys just post a bunch of garbage everyday hoping they get enough ad clicks to pay for their Facebook space. Unfollowed.

I can’t even see them with all the condensation trails in the way.

Dude, condensation trails last 50-100 yds at the most. Those suckers are HANGING in the sky…….doh !
