Easy DIY Survivalist Fish Trap

Chances are you already have some of these supplies laying around your house. We had everyything except the dowels, and those can be purchased at any hardware store and even some hobby shops depending on where you're located.

What you'll need to get started:

  • A knife
  • 34 dowels ¼ inch thick at least 36 inches long or a little longer
  • Flexible vine – You can also use wisteria runners
  • Thick jute chord

1. Start The Shell

Take some sections of your thickest vine and tie together two hoops that are 9 to 10 inches in diameter. Use your strong string and tie it tightly.

2. Finish The Shell

Repeat the process on the other end to create the cylindrical shell of the trap. Tuck in any loose vine ends to secure the weaving.

3. Plug the End

For this trap, I plugged an end with a mesh of dowel and vine.

4. Build A Funnel

Use string and some short vine pieces to create the cone. Weave in some slender vines to make it stable. Use a variety of lengths in the cone’s “teeth” to make an irregular opening. This funnel should be tied in place after the trap is baited.

5. Baiting And Setting

Using a bit more string, tie some rotten meat inside the trap, near the center.

See? We weren't joking when we said it was easy. The only issue we stumbled over a bit was the weaving, but that's only because we don't have small nimble fingers! Either way, it was a simple project and we had ours completed in under an hour. Now we've just gotta put it to good use to see what we can catch for dinner. We really liked the tips and photos from Outdoor Life.

Are You Gonna Try This? If so, let us know. We'd love to see your finished product if you do. Share it with us in the comments section below.

Be sure to check into the legality of using the traps if you are trying this in a non-survival situation. Some states heavily regulate the use of them, and in some they are outright illegal.
