Expanding foam may not seem like a survival tool, but whether you are talking about your everyday home, a camp or a bug-out shelter, this amazing product seals gaps in buildings, eliminates drafts and generally “tightens” a building, essentially weather proofing it.

It also can serve as an almost “fail-safe” packing material.

As a product, expanding foam was created by Otto Bayer in 1937. It took multiple iterations and decades to get to the product most of us know best.

The original goal was to make dry foam materials by mixing various chemicals and creating an expanding, water-proof and insulating reaction.

As a survival tool, expanding foam would fall into the “maintenance and preventative maintenance” category.

Used to seal gaps in buildings or to insulate, it is almost unbeatable.
