If you are in a bug-out situation, an extended hike that devolves into a survival situation or even if you are just building your survival kit / bug-out bag, one question you will have to consider is what type of backpack you should go with: Military or Civilian.
Both have up and downsides – and both tend to have die-hard fans who have strong opinions on which is better in a survival situation. As with most things these days, getting one side to admit the other might have a point can be a challenge.
Bur the reality is both play roles in a survival situation and what you choose really should be dictated by the situation you face.
On the next page, we cover the two types of backpack, as well as the pros and cons of each.

The bigger the backpack, the bigger the target you are
Military every time….. Civilian forget many important items for basic survival mode….
Military packs more durable
MILITARY, ALL DAY EVERY DAY
Military packs, theyre designed to last no matter the environment plus they resist rot and mold better.
Military packs are designed exactly for these situations. I prefer the ALICE system, just because that is what I started with in the Corps, but own a 3 day assault pack from the MOLLE system too. Neither are that heavy and designed for carrying everything you need to survive. Even a small ALICE pack is still as light as a commercial pack and usually more durable.
Military
The one with your$#%&!@*in it
I have a Backpack from Marlboro I’ve had for 25 years and one from an army/navy store the one from Marlboro is more water tight. And easier to wear.
Decent Civilian ones are military inspired. Mine is Eberlestock HiSpeed Pack and its used as much in the military as it is in the civilian world.
When you prep, get gear you would bet your life on.
