Hopefully in a bugout situation, you'll have a tent or some other form of shelter with you so that you don't have to rely on your natural shelter-building skills.
Unfortunately, we can't always predict every situation that will come up in our SHTF scenarios. Your tent could become damaged, or you could even forget it in the chaos. Another thing that could happen is that you could have everything you need and have a perfect camp set up and then go off on a scouting mission and lose your way.
When most people have to rely on primitive shelters, it's not because they neglected to pack their own shelter. Instead it's because they walked away from camp and couldn't find their way back. For that reason, learning as many survival shelters as possible will greatly increase your chances in different climates.
