If you live in a rural or suburban area, or even an urban area if you have enough space, chances are you have a backup generator to power your basic appliances if the power goes out.

In the Northeast, for example, our recent winters have had at least one storm where power was out for at a minimum of a day or so. In some cases, the power was out for over a week.

Chances are, though, your home generator is hardwired into your house and modifying it is difficult.

In a long-term survival situation, however, it's more than likely you will have the need to power up other smaller things, like car batteries or even power-tools. This innovative idea uses an old lawn mower engine and alternator to generate power for just such type of tasks.

The video on the next page shows you how to make this smaller-scale generator, which in a long-term survival situation, could be very helpful.
