File steel makes for excellent blades. It is remarkably tough, as it is designed to be stronger than other steel (otherwise it wouldn't make a very effective file), and is already in the perfect overall shape to be turned into a blade.
Watch the video below to learn how to make yourself an awesome custom blade from this common household tool.
With a little know-how and some pretty basic tools, you can make a top-notch fighting knife from just an old garden file. What make this video great is that it teaches a lot of great methods of knife-making, from stacked leather handles to the shaping and heat treating of blades. You can use these methods not only in this project, but can modify the outcome to shape other tools, as well.

Just need to affix a price and accept orders, I’ll take one, the dagger.
Cool
I have a couple of knives my dad made in 1941 while he was in the Sevices. He made them out of old bastard files and broken aircraft parts for the guard and pomals .
Still a nice knife man. Nothing like making your own.
Just started doing it…..that was the first, this is the second
When I had a forge i used to turn old files into knives and hammers into axes. It is so fun to recycle. I should build another one again and start pounding stuff out again and selling them on etsy or something.
I actually like this one more. Cheaper and still practical.
