One of the easiest ways to get food when SHTF is to go fishing. Unless you're spearfishing, fishing won't use up a lot of energy and also requires minimal resources. Plus, it yields healthy proteins and fats when you're able to catch some fish.

Of course, even though fishing doesn't require a lot of resources, don't forget that you still need bait, a line, and a hook. Bait is easy to acquire — just find a nightcrawler or two and you're all set.

Natural fibers, a paracord strand or shoelace, can be used to make a line but getting a hook can be challenging. If you don't own a factory-made fishing hook, you could be SOL unless you know how to make one from scratch.

Primitive people used hand-carved fishhooks before stainless steel hooks even existed, and this is a skill any prepper can easily learn. This skill will ensure your survival when you're bugging out, and you don't want to go hungry.

There are also many fish traps you can build in rivers or streams from rocks, sticks or twine… you just need bait. I know of 3 you can build, then visit at sunset for a good (70%) chance at a multiple catch.

BTW *for pepper/survivalist gear-borders* I found the replacement sets of eyelets for poles you can make in the field in about five minutes.
They are more compact & less cumbersome than trying to pack around a rod & reel. I’ve seen some telescopic compact models that are travel-light… but never bought one.
What I did experience was that super LED lure “mighty bite” which works like cheating at poker! Easier than foraging for live bait… safer than carrying canned bait.
