Many aspects of modern housing have been around longer than we might expect. For example, tiled roofs – specifically clay roofing tile – can be traced all the way 10,000 years B.C. in China and the Middle East. Clay tile was a go-to for shelter for many people – the Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, and early settlers of the New World.

Clay is an excellent component to incorporate in housing because of its fireproof qualities, its insulation, and its resilience against the elements.

Heated flooring is another feature that we consider a relatively modern invention, even though it has been around since 5,000 B.C. Archeologists have found evidence that baked and heated stones were used in Korea. By 500 B.C., the Greeks and Romans created hypocausts to raise their flooring and allow warm air to pass underneath.

But did you know that you can make your own shelter utilizing these features, by using materials that you can find in the woods?

Take a look on the next page to watch this survivor create his own tiled roof hut, with nothing but primitive tools and his bare hands!
