(Video) This Prepper Demonstrates the Eskimo Strap Drill Method of Friction Fire and it’s Awe-Inspiring!

friction fire

Note: This video is a bit long, but well worth watching through the entire thing. If you need a primitive fire starting method, this one is hard to beat if you follow the instructions!

The Eskimo Strap Drill method of starting a fire relies on friction between two pieces of wood to heat a hearth board to the point of ignition.

While its construction is relatively simple, not following the steps required can result in futility.

But if you are in a situation where your other fire starters are no longer operable or you do not have them, this method is almost foolproof!

Check out the video on the next page to see how to do it!

Jesus… I could’ve started 6 bowdrill fires by the time this video was over

That was awesome! I’m going to try and build one of these. BTW, if you can figure out a way to clamp the hearth while you were notching it, that would make it easier and safer.

well if anyone should know how to make a quick consistent fire I would think it would be an eskimo who’s cold as hell

Australian Aborigines have been making fire this way for 60000 years. How long have the Eskimos been doing this ? Interesting parallel.

This is strictly my, personal opinion. Yes, I’ve done friction fires and I tell you all, it’s not as easy as videos make it to be. Don’t believe me, go try it yourself. But the bottom line: it does work. On the flip side, I can’t see any reason for someone even poorly prepared to not be able to start a fire using modern implements. Yes, including a lighter.
