giant gorilla monkey fist

For those new to the world of knots, a monkey’s fist or paw is a specific type of knot.

Resembling the paw or fist of a monkey, this knot is often used as a weight at the end of a rope or heaving line. It is generally tied around a stone to use as a weight to aid in throwing the rope from one location to the next, but it can also be made without a separate weight simply by the method of tying the knot.

On a ship, it can be used to pull a cable to shore. It can also be utilized as an anchor while rock climbing, and even as a self-defense weapon!

You can make your own giant monkey fist – we will call it a gorilla – follow these simple steps! Check out the video on the next page!

We had a gun on our ship that fired it to other ships for mail transfers.
Quite interesting to watch the video.
Always wondered how they made these.
Guys on our ship were pretty secretive about their methods.

A WW 2 merchant marine taught me how to do it. Then he critiqued it to death. Murry Ryder. Great man.

A Japanese ninja Manriki gusari can be made from a number 3 straight link chain, (length your choice) two number 3 lap links, two screw eyes, two long hex nuts about 1 1/2 inches, two regular hex nuts and two washers to fit under the smaller hex nuts. Put the lap links on each end of the chain then hook each lap link to the screw eyes and hammer the lap links closed. Put the screw end of the screw eye through the long hex nut, then the washer. Top it with the smaller hex nut and tighten it with a wrench. I made one like this in the 70s. To carry it concealed and at the ready; put one end down your coat sleeve and the other end will be parallel to your rib cage. If you are right handed put it down your left sleeve or left handed vice versa.
