For those new to the world of knots, a monkey’s fist or paw is a specific type of knot.
Resembling the paw or fist of a monkey, this knot is often used as a weight at the end of a rope or heaving line. It is generally tied around a stone to use as a weight to aid in throwing the rope from one location to the next, but it can also be made without a separate weight simply by the method of tying the knot.
On a ship, it can be used to pull a cable to shore. It can also be utilized as an anchor while rock climbing, and even as a self-defense weapon!
You can make your own giant monkey fist – we will call it a gorilla – follow these simple steps! Check out the video on the next page!

You do realize the original monkey fist was a naval device and was about 8 to 10″ across.
Why?
Looks easier than the conventional way. I will tie them with a 3/4 shot of lead & hook to a keyring. Nice Lil thump on the end of a 6″ lanyard.
Cause gun shots are loud n sometime you don’t want to kill them
One that I made in July of 1976 was still being used on the boat in 2004. Big 1 inch treaded nut inside and dipped in red paint twice.
