The recession hit a lot of people hard and gave new vitalization to the prepping movement. People who firsthand witnessed the brunt of the economic shift began to adopt new ways of saving money and learned how to buffer their lives against the economic instability just in case it got worse.

For many, it did. This recession also led to a trend of smaller and smaller homes. While the recession is receding, the tiny home trend is still growing, as more and more people are beginning to see the benefits having a small home has on their bank accounts.

Building is cheaper, electricity and heating are much cheaper, and many of these homes are small enough to be highly mobile, meaning that the homeowners can settle down wherever they choose.

On the next page, you can see the 168-sq. ft. home a family built for themselves after the recession forced them to close down their family restaurant.

People tend to think they “need” more space than they actually do.

Props to this family. Well done! And great plans for the future. This is exactly how I’d do it if I had to start over. Live in my truck and get a membership at a gym for showers until I could afford an RV. Find a cheap rv park and save for land, move to land and slowly build the necessary systems.. then build a cabin. You can do so much with life when you are rent free.

The built a home mortgage free while living in this shed. It has been awhile since I checked out their page. I will have to find it. Thanks for sharing!

This movement is so cool! Opposable thumbs, the ability to reason and adapt are among the most noble of human attributes. I can’t wait to build an off grid solar/wind powered, water catching adobe tiny house in the desert of New Mexico.
