When SHTF, an important thing to consider is how you are going to communicate with others in your group or with emergency services, should something go wrong.
One option for this is a HAM radio, but that requires a license and is a very complicated system to learn–not a great option to rely on if you don't have a great deal of practice under your belt.
Another method is to have walkie-talkies, but there isn't a great deal of range on those. The best method for long-range communication will be the method you're most used to.
For most people, that method is a cell phone. One problem with this method is that cell phones don't have the most reliable batteries.
