Your first step should be to consider the immediate area, like your neighbors and your family, so a good set of walkie-talkies is a fantastic lifeline, and it will enable you to quickly pass information as far out as a couple of miles.

Sure, a phone works equally well right now, but when the grid is down your phone will be pretty much useless, too. Getting a HAM radio license is also a great idea to consider. You won't need the license when SHTF, but at least you'll be able to practice beforehand.
