If your matches are wet, your lighter is out of fuel, it's a cloudy day, making your magnifying glass useless, and you don't have hours to waste trying to get a friction fire going.
Sounds like a pretty rough weekend in the woods. Luckily, if you've ever spent some time in a high school chemistry class, you can whip up a pretty handy little fire with just some regular household sugar and some potassium permanganate.
This is an easy trick that utilizes the chemical nature of the two ingredients to erupt a nice little flame that's more than hot enough to ignite any tinder you manage to get your hands on.
Check out just how easy this method is with the video on the next page.

Dryer lint ,flint and steel , dryer lint goes up like gasoline .
You still can buy sulfur and salt Peter at the pharmacy but chances are they will have to order it in unless they are a formulary (older school pharmacy, not walmart). Also Amazon has it as well as potassium permanganate, aluminum powder, iron oxide and all sorts of old school chemistry class supplies.
Oh, yeah, because I ALWAYS have potassium permanganate with me.
Yes because I always carry potassium permanganate with me. Seriously?
Matches wet? Sugar probably is too…..
Yea, cause we all keep that stuff on us.

Pretty sad when I have to wait for three pages of ads to load and still can’t get the article.
If I need fire that bad~ I’m very shure there’s not gonna be any sugar around!!!
Why do you think they call it prepping?
I have two separate sealed ziplock bags that have wood matches in a waterproof container, a regular box of matches, two books of matches, one bick lighter, a magnesium block with attached flint and steal both sealed in a water proof container that also has lint from the dryer and charcloth. On top of that, I wear glasses and carry two spare pair in my bugout bag. I also have a flashlight with the conical reflective piece that I can use along with the battery and some steel wool. I also have 4 military MREs that each have books of matches. I think I’m covered for fire starting and water processing.
Damn my matches are soaked!! Good thing I kept my sugar In the dry pouch.
Flint and steel is all I need.
Try this Jerry Beck, see what happens.
Couldn’t make it work.
That like saying you can make fire with a block of wood, then pulling out a blow torch to light it with. If you happens to have a jar of potassium……you probably had a match or two….stupid
Yeah…except dudes video was how to make fire with sugar…not how to make it with potassium p
He had another video starting a fire with a lemon, copper nail, steel nail, and a foot of wire…..just the stuff I pack in my ruck..lol
Steve Pappas
Your matches just got all Wet crossing a river to escape the Enemy. Now what Dumass ?
I yut them in a zip lock back then in another zip lock bag then in another get the point fuckface. Did my little propane torch get wet too asswipe? Condescending prick.
really? you have WET matches and dry sugar! oh, some potassium$#%&!@*!!
Because potassium permanganate is much easier to come by than ordinary matches.
Can you use those little pink packets of sweetener? I don’t use sugar.
And you just happen to have.. Sugar?
Rog Vaughn let me get my potassium permaganate out and some sugar. Where do you even get potassium permaganate?
because EVERYBODY just happens to have a supply of potassium permanganate handy, right?
Yeah, because everyone keeps…potassium permagonate….hanging around. Stupid Russians.
Yes because I always carry potassium permanganate with me…..
Wet matches, no lighter, no problem….. i ALWAYS carry a flame thrower with me !! Where does this stupid$#%&!@*comes from.
Rock silver and water works better.
They forgot is illegal to purchase potassium permanganate without a license in the usa… is not like you can just walk in into a department store and purchase the item… good luck…! Specially now with all the terrorist threats.
My Zppo is always with me.
All you need is magnesium and steel got fire
No matches but hey I have a pocket full of sugar and potassium pome… whatever. Seriously!
Got mine three years ago in Portland Oregon.
I never leave home without my handy dandy potassium permagnatite…..
Useless info here!
Feral rod and magnesium
I always carry some potassium permanganate with me, don’t you?
its also used to purefy water,,also instead of sugar, glycol (anti freeze works too,,,,,
Great comments. Me, I just carry around a pocket fission reactor.
Magnesium permanganate. Yep. Back in my boy scouting days that was the very first thing they taught us to put in our survival kit.
Sugar , saltpeter and a little bit of clay, just enough to hold the mixture together. Mix thoroughly, and roll out till it resembles a tube. Insert skewer With cannon fuse attached to it nearly poking through the other end. A model rocket engine.
I used to do this as a kid but did it with glycerine instead of sugar. Just a few drops of glycerine on the potassium permanganate will start the reaction and burst into flame. Potassium permanganate disappeared from the shelves of stores, probably for this reason. Would love to find a source for it!
Lowes in pool/water treatment area, amazon and ebay
where you get the stuff?
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=potassium+permanganate&_sop=12
No need for matches, magnifying glass, or potassium permanganate…. I just smacked my two pieces of U235 together and PRESTO! I got fire. (Just as likely as having a jar of KMnO4 handy.)
I never leave home without my potassium permanganate. I even carry a bottle with me when I’m going to the store to buy more.
