A real fire will do a lot to raise the spirits of any traveler. It's warming to the body, can be used to purify water, and can make any food palatable.

There are a lot of ways to make a fire, by the utilization of a lighter or a spark rod, or even the primitive use of a friction fire. With all of the ways to make fire, the one weakness that unites them all is being wet.

Dampness makes almost all fire starter materials utterly useless. This means that unless you have excellent waterproofing for your fire starting materials, they won't do you any good if you fall into the water with them or if you experience rain all day before you decide to build your fire.

Luckily, there is a way you can build a fire when your materials get wet. Go to the next page to learn how.
