Birch trees are one of the most useful plants you can find in the woods. The oils in their bark make them ideal for starting fires, as they will ignite even when wet.

These same oils also make the birch an ideal candidate for making boats, as the Ojibwa will attest with their birch bark canoes. Usually, you need to use the oils when they are still embedded within the bark, meaning that the usefulness of this oil can only go so far.
