This trashcan smoker is so simple, it's amazing. All you need is a trashcan, cooking grate, tin to hold wood chips, wood chips and a hot plate.

In terms of tools, this guy used a heavy duty knife, but it is probably a better idea to use a drill and if you know how to do it, use a drill and jig saw to cut out the hole for the cord to the hotplate.

There are also alternatives you can employ to modify this to eliminate the hot plate and to use fire and wood, which would be ideal if you were faced with a survival situation and the power was out.
