Damascus steel is the process of folding the steel over and over again until you have a series of waves within the metal which are then brought out through acid etching.

It's always amazing to watch something so beautiful come from absolutely nothing, and often through some very straightforward processes. That's not to say that this isn't a difficult project, though.
