For most of us, steel wool is a tool to scour a pan to clean it or as a really rough sanding tool. Did you know, however, that steel wool also has a pretty amazing role as a survival tool?

Because its individual fibers are highly flammable, it is a really easy, almost fail-safe fire starter!

Better yet, if you have a nine volt battery and some steel wool, you have all you need to create an instant fire in virtually any weather condition, which in a survival situation, could be a critical advantage over traditional fire starting materials.

It even works in damp or slightly wet conditions, although if you are face with a drenched situation, the task becomes as challenging as any other fire starting material.

After watching the video on the next page, I added steel wool and a nine volt batter to my list of “must haves” for any survival kit!
