You can tell it’s been done. Once it gets dark it’s hard to see out of your windshield. Especially when it rains

Nice but… Detail the whole car, and apply a ceramic coating instead of the rain-x step. Costly but worth it.

Bodyman painter 50 yrs, nothing better than fine steel wool for windows and chrome!

I’ve been in auto body for 13 years. We do this all the time and it works excellent, especially for removing overspray.

    I do apologize….and I’ll try it on a older pickup I have…
But just plain steel wool……No stainless steel…etc

body shops have done this for occasional overspray, would use .000 or .0000 fine and super fine, would be smart to rinse right away, specially in high humid areas. Also works great for stainless steel sinks!

After you scrub your windshield with steel wool. Check your blinker fluid and make sure your tires have enough antifreeze.

Kenneth Ray Stone I have done paint and bodywork for 35 years and have spent thousands of hours buffing and polishing paint, chrome, and glass on show cars, and there is no way I would ever use steel wool on my windshield.

Maybe not show cars but if you have some bird$#%&!@*on your 96 Chevy feel free to scrub that$#%&!@*off with some steel wool.

Then don’t,I use it all the time and if it was causing damage it would be evident when driving against the sun. 00 steel wool won’t do damage. Seems like with 35 years experience you’d know that…

000 steel wool works fine. You could probably even go a bit higher. If 000 scratches windows on your car. You have bigger problems.

  12. Kevin Blaylock said:

If your windshield is so dirty that you can’t clean it with the appropriate cleaners and a microfiber cloth you have problems.

Actually, not screwing around here, 0000 steel wool IS excellent for cleaning your windshield. I’ve been using it for years when I wash. Do NOT let it touch a dry windshield tho. And nothing more course than 0000.

Kevin, ever driven through a hoard of grasshoppers? Almost need to start with a putty knife.

Just to help clarify this if you google it there are loads of sites/stories about this. They say to use 0000 fine steel wool.

I’m not saying this to troll or argue I’m posting this because I really had to stop and think whether or not it would be practical.

At first I’m like “oh yeah yeah right my windshield will be all hazy and scratched up” but then I started thinking about the whole “buffing” proves for headlights (including glass ones) and it seemed actually practical. I have a few spare cars in my drive way so I could always test this as soon as I grab some 0000 steel wool to show proof if it works or not.

(Because the cars are junk anyway if I ruin the windshield I’m all good)

Repeated use of steel wool will micro scratch the glass. Just another one of those gimmicky hacks everyone likes to talk about. I personally will not use it.

Kevin what the hell do you care what I use on my windshield,it hasn’t got a fucking thing to do with you. Go to your safe place and put your safety pin on.

Y’all are dumbasses. The ONLY thing that can scratch glass is a diamond… and yes the steel wool works!

  20. Kevin Blaylock said:

Joseph Scopelliti The Mohs hardness scale is a measure of hardness of substances. Anything with a higher number can scratch anything below it. Notice that glass is only a 6 to 7 on the scale. Anything above that including steel wool can scratch glass.

    Hardness Substance or Mineral

    1 Talc
    2 Gypsum
2.5 to 3 pure Gold, Silver
    3 Calcite, Copper penny
    4 Fluorite
    4 to 4.5 Platinum
    4 to 5 Iron
    5 Apatite
    6 Orthoclase
    6 Titanium
    6.5 Iron pyrite
6 to 7 Glass, Vitreous pure silica
    7 Quartz (Crystallized silica)
    7 to 7.5 Garnet
    7 to 8 Hardened steel

I’m a detailer. We use this method daily. It’s great for water spots. Another great use is steel wool and mild detergent on leather upholstery.. scrub the dirt and stains away. Of course follow up with a leather protectant when done.

BON AMI. … is what we used. Made out of eggshells. … can’t scratch the glass (like comet or STEEL WOOL)
