The best thing about extension cords for cordage is that they don't really wear out or break down in the elements as easily as rope or duct tape. The copper inside the cords doesn't really corrode, either, apart from the green patina it develops.

This makes copper an excellent resource in binding because you can be sure it won't waste away like steel wire or fishing line. If nothing else, having a stockpile of extension cords means you've got plenty of spare parts and wiring when your other electronics break down.
