The concept of a time capsule dates back millennium; folks have always wanted to show future generations what their lives were like, what was important to them and what they were facing at the time they stored the capsule.

Time capsules allow us to store indefinitely what is important to us for posterity (unless you lose the time capsule, which happened with the US Capitol building's time capsule).

Basically, a weather-proof storage unit, or capsule, is placed in a safe place for access at some point in the future.
