If you’re out in the wilderness and need to keep your eyes open for materials to produce fire, you want to look for more than just dry leaves and sticks. Take note of the rocks on the ground as well. Using rocks for friction to create a spark is an ancient method for building fires.

Look for rocks that are quartzite with their granular texture or straight quartz crystals if you’re lucky. If you’re not sure what to look for – familiarize yourself with the appearance of these rocks so that their identification won’t be in question when you’re running around looking for rocks to light your fire!

If you’re not sure, use your carbon steel knife to strike up against the rock to see if it creates a spark.
